Services: Visioning

The Strategic Commitment® Framework

Tell us about your strategic planning process.”

“It is boring, tedious, grueling and sometimes pointless.”

Ouch! We have heard these responses from executives when asked to describe their annual planning processes.

Why?

Because most strategic planning activities are poorly disguised budgeting exercises rooted in history and aimed at extrapolating next years plan from this year plus-or-minus 3%.
As one Global 500 executive put it: “Strategic planning; that’s when we go offsite to agree on our plans for the future, and then go back to our offices and do what we were going to do anyhow.”

Our approach is designed to replace this fatigue and frustration with clarity, ambition and inspiration.

In the pursuit of a bold, compelling future, we steer leadership teams to explore and develop answers to three simple, future-oriented questions:

What is our unique and distinct offer? What do we provide that distinguishes us from everyone else?

  • Novelty?
  • Expertise?
  • Breadth or depth of experience?
  • Variety?
  • Exclusivity?

What differentiates the manner in which we provide our products and services?

  • Speed?
  • Price point?
  • Higher/Lower touch?
  • Footprint?
  • Accessibility?

What principles shape our workplace dynamics and culture?

  • Accountability?
  • Having each other's backs?
  • Doing great work with and for each other?
  • Openness and Transparency
  • Other (to be defined by the leadership team)

These simple questions are wrestled with, turned inside out, vigorously and rigorously discussed and debated beyond the initial interest and excitement as well as the occasional frustration and fatigue. After extended hours over days and weeks, the leadership group begins to orbit something clear, coherent and deeply meaningful.

These words begin to capture a bold, compelling future distilled into a concise artifact (often only 2-4 pages) that expresses the future as both aspiration, inspiration and declaration: “This is who and what we commit ourselves to delivering, and this is how we will interact with each other to position ourselves for success.” The typical CEO-drafted list of priorities disseminated through email or a video town hall is not constructed nor designed to generate this broad level of alignment and platform of ownership and support. Our version is built on an all-in leadership team galvanized around delivering on a bold, ambitious agenda.
